What’s Happening With Mom?
“How are you feeling?” “How are you feeling?” “Hi! How are you feeling?” A little weary of the same questions? When you have backache (still), cramps (still), heartburn (still) and need to pee all the time (oh gee, where’s the nearest bathroom?), there’s really nothing new to report. After the excitement of early pregnancy wears off, it might seem like there’s a really long way to go with nothing much to do except grow bigger, and right now it can feel like there really isn’t a whole lot of action.
But remind yourself that you’ve known you were pregnant for a few months, but almost everyone else has only just found out. New babies are very exciting, even for total strangers in the supermarket, and all the people who are asking you the same questions do care about you.
Medicate your backache, have some me time, and get away from the “How are you feeling” people with warm bubble baths. The water supports some of the weight of your uterus and relives a little of the backache. Or if you feel like being more active in the water, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for pregnant women.
What’s Happening With Baby?
While all you seem to be doing is growing steadily bigger, there’s a lot of action inside you.
Baby’s brand new bones begin to harden, leg bones and inner ear bones first. Together with the new nerve connections from brain to ear forming, it means that baby can hear sounds. The inside of your uterus is a noisy place, with blood pumping in the umbilical cord, your heart beating, and the uterus’ next door neighbor, your digestive tract, gurgling it’s appreciation for that breakfast burrito.
Can baby your baby understand you? This week, probably not, but it won’t be long before they can start processing sounds, evidenced by just about every baby being able to recognize mom’s voice when they are born. If you don’t feel like talking to the “how are you feeling?” people, talk to your baby, who will love to hear from you.
Baby can also swallow, and practices the new skill by drinking the amniotic fluid that surrounds them.
