Pregnancy Calendar Week 22

What’s Happening With Mom?

Being pregnant ultimately comes to one conclusion: labor, and delivery. Getting that baby out is a big deal and if you haven’t given it much thought so far, you might be thinking about it this week. Are you excited? Apprehensive? Scared?

Childbirth is a major event in any mother’s life, and everyone seems to have a birth story that they just have to share with you. Other women’s birth stories can range from inspiring to downright terrifying. And have you been told a some of those terrifying stories, and right now you are feeling a little, or more than a little nervous?

In reality, the majority of births are eventful but essentially medically uncomplicated. True horror stories are the exception.

A childbirth preparation class, or a good book, will explain what’s involved in labor and delivery, and should allay some of your fears.

And remember that labor and delivery is short compared to all the time you’ll spend with your newborn, so while the birth is a major event, try to keep it in perspective.

Baby’s own blood supply increases too this week. Until now, baby’s liver and spleen have been making blood cells, and now baby’s bone marrow joins in to increase blood cell production.

Baby’s reproductive system is developing this week. In boys, the testes descend outwards from the abdomen. Baby girls have a uterus, vagina and ovaries, and she’s already made all the eggs she’ll ever use in her lifetime. Those are your possible future grandbabies!

Baby is now growing rapidly, measuring around 11 inches long, and weighing just about one pound.
