Pregnancy Calendar Week 28

What’s Happening With Mom?

When you are in the third trimester, the prospect of having a newborn suddenly gets more real, and there doesn’t seem to be very much time left before you need to be ready for the new arrival.

The only thing babies truly can’t live without is love, but they also tend to need lots of other stuff. Do you have the nursery painted and a rack of little outfits all neatly hung? Are you waiting to see what gifts you’ll receive at your baby shower before you go shopping for what’s left over? Are you overwhelmed by the amount of things you know you’ll need? Or are you confused by all the options in every type of baby product and have bought nothing?

People love to buy gifts for new babies but they tend to be adorable baby clothes, and toys, rather than things that are practical for a newborn, like diapers. Babies won’t play with toys until they are a few months old, and will spit up and poop on every outfit, regardless of how adorable it is. So what do you really need for your newborn? Here’s a list.

Baby’s eyes open for the first time, and now baby can blink, and closes their eyes to sleep. If you could peek inside, you would be able to tell what color your baby’s eyes are. Your baby’s eyes at birth might not be the color their eyes will always be. Many babies are born with gray eyes, which gradually changes to their permanent eye color in the months after birth.

Baby’s brain is developing rapidly and the parts which regulate body systems, and have conscious thoughts, and control movement are intensely active. But you knew that already – baby is moving about all the time right now!

Your baby is now sleeping and waking regularly, sleeping for about 20-30 minutes then waking for about the same time. Don’t worry though, the newborn sleep routine isn’t quite as short! They sleep, for ooh, all of 45 minutes at a stretch. You didn’t like sleeping all that much, did you?

Baby measures 10 inches long head to rump, and this week will hit the two pound mark.
