Pregnancy Calendar Week 7

What’s Happening With Mom?

Becoming a little forgetful yet? Even though you might be feeling a little ditzy as pregnancy brain commences, it’s nice to know that your body has everything organized and is getting everything done in plenty of time.

Your breasts are already preparing for breastfeeding. Your breasts might be sore, swollen, or itchy. Your nipples and areolas darken as they prepare to make milk. Your breasts will increase one or several cup sizes over your pregnancy. Some women delight in their new rock star boobs, some are plain miserable with the extra weight to carry. Whatever category you are in, a supportive, good fitting bra is a must to avoid sagging and minimize discomfort. Expect to change bras a few times during and after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Make your mind up, girls.

And while we are on the subject of fashion, you may feel more comfortable in looser clothing. While your baby is still microscopic, your uterus is expanding and the muscles and ligaments in your abdomen are relaxing. That’s what is causing the bloated feeling, and making your belly stick out a little. It’s also the cause of celebrities’ dreaded “is she pregnant or did she just eat lunch” photos.

This week, you could have your first obstetrician’s appointment. Your doctor’s office will have you pee on a stick again to confirm your pregnancy. The doctor will calculate your due date, weigh you, perform a pelvic exam, a breast exam, go over your general health, discuss any past pregnancies, schedule you for blood tests, and have you pee in a cup to test your urine. Get used to peeing in a cup, you’ll be doing it every time you visit the doctor from now on.

If your lab work is normal, and you don’t have any reason to visit more often, most first-time moms will be scheduled to see the doctor once a month in the first two trimesters. But if you have any questions or concerns between visits, or feel like something isn’t right, call the doctor’s office.

What’s Happening With Baby?

You may have pregnancy brain, but your baby’s brain is developing incredibly rapidly this week. And the rest of your baby isn’t slacking either. By week 7, the lenses of the eyes, nostrils, and even the color of baby’s eyes are visible. Baby has hands, feet, and tiny buds that will grow into fingers and toes. And all that is packed into a little more than 1/3 inch.
